A new large scale work for the School of Public Health Harvard (Cambridge) and Brigham Women's Hospital (Boston), both in Massachusetts (USA), has ruled that exposure to high levels of mercury are associated with the risk of coronary artery disease, stroke or cardiovascular disease. The results have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The researchers analyzed data from two studies: Monitoring Health Professionals, who worked with 51,529 men, and the BWH-based Nurses' Health, with 121,700 women screened. Participants in both projects completed questionnaires biennially from 1986 and 1976, respectively, about their medical history, risk factors, the incidence of diseases and lifestyle.

The team measured mercury concentrations in samples of the nails of his big toe in 7,000 participants, some of whom had suffered a cardiovascular event during follow-up. We identified 3,427 new cases of coronary heart disease and stroke.

In 20 percent greater risk, the average accumulation of mercury was 0.7 micrograms per gram. In 10 percent greater risk was of a microgram per gram.

After adjusting for age, gender and other cardiovascular risk factors, they rejected any association between the mineral and the risk of such diseases. He even received a lower risk associated with high amounts of mercury, attributable, according to the authors, the beneficial effects of fish.
Nor was there evidence of negative effects due to fish consumption and the level of selenium, whether in a high or low.
